Notes on WAR IS OVER. BANG THE DRUMS! by Lorraine Bowen

I've written my first (probably a one-off) serious classical song.
'War is Over, Bang the Drums!'
I started it in 2004 but couldn't find the right classical soprano.
I recently recorded it with Sharon Elizabeth and her voice is absolutely spine-chillingly beautiful and perfect. It has the training of a classical soprano but there are hints of Shirley Bassey, jazz and cabaret in there too. I hope you agree.

For me, war is a stupid pastime. There is no joy, no good, no nothing except defending borders and regimes and that is something that could be solved around a table. What a waste of time, money and lives killing everyone and destroying the environment at a time we need to be investing in our future on Planet Earth.

In this song a woman sings alone from the top of a hill. She looks down onto the destruction and is angry and full of contempt for what she sees.
Nothing left - no birds, no animals, just dust and rubble.

I saw this scene on the TV many years ago during the Syrian war, during the Hiroshima bomb before that. Humans never learn...
The Ukraine invasion has saddened me even more and inspired me to finish the piece as the scenes look exactly the same...

... the message is ongoing...
